1. Who we are and what this covers
Battler Golf League Pty Ltd (ABN 38 695 747 061, "BGL", "we", "us" or "our") runs the Battler Golf League. This policy covers our website (thebgl.com.au), the BGL app (app.thebgl.com.au and the BGL apps on the App Store and Google Play) and our online store. It explains what personal information we collect, what we do with it, who we share it with and how you can get at it. We handle your information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
2. What we collect
Information you give us:
- Your details: name, email address, phone number, postcode and state when you register a team, register your interest in a league or contact us
- Golf information: your Golf Australia handicap and Golf ID (formerly your GolfLink number), verified through Golf Australia
- Your teammate's name and email when you register as a pair so we can set up their account
- Photos you choose to upload, like your avatar and match selfies. By uploading a photo you agree we can use it in the app and in BGL promotion, including on our website, in our ads and on our social channels
- Order details when you buy through our store, including your delivery address
Information created as you play:
- League data: fixtures, match scores, results, standings, awards and votes
- Messages you send to other teams through match chat in the app
- A device token if you turn on push notifications in the mobile app
Information collected automatically:
- Website and app usage: pages visited, the page you registered from, your device and browser type
- Where you came from: campaign tags on the link you arrived by (UTM parameters) and, if you came from a Meta ad, the click identifier and Meta's cookies so we can tell which ads work
Payment details are processed by our payment providers (currently Shopify Payments) and never stored by us.
3. How we use it
- Running the league: registration, verifying handicaps, generating fixtures and matching opponents, live scoring, standings, awards and sorting out disputes
- Telling you about your matches and your league by email and, if you turn them on, push notifications
- Processing payments and delivering what you buy
- Answering your messages and requests
- Sending you news and offers from BGL and our partners, where you have agreed to receive them. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link
- Measuring our advertising and improving the website and the app, using aggregated and de-identified information wherever we can
- Meeting our legal obligations
4. Who can see it
- Other players: your name, your team name, your handicap and your general location are visible to your opponents so you can organise and score your matches. Your results and standings are visible to everyone in your league. Team-level results and ladders are published on our website. Photos you upload appear in the app and may appear in BGL promotion, including on our website, in our ads and on our social channels. Email us if you would rather a photo of you was not used and we will take it down
- The services that run BGL: our database and hosting (Supabase and Vercel), push notifications (Google Firebase), email (Resend and MailerLite), our store and payments (Shopify) and advertising measurement (Meta). Each only gets what it needs to do its job
- Golf Australia, to verify your handicap
- Our partners only where you have agreed, for example to redeem a partner offer
- When the law requires it, or to protect our rights or someone's safety
We never sell your personal information.
5. Where it is stored
Our database is hosted in Australia (Sydney). Some of the services above store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States. We only use providers with recognised security and privacy standards.
6. Keeping and deleting it
We keep your details while you are part of the league and for as long as we need them to run it and meet our legal obligations. League results stay on the league record for history and statistics. You can ask us to delete your account from the Profile page in the app or by emailing us. We anonymise your personal details within 30 days. Your match results stay on the record without your name attached.
7. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Show you the personal information we hold about you
- Correct anything that is wrong
- Delete your account and personal information, subject to anything we are required by law to keep
- Stop sending you marketing. The unsubscribe link in any marketing email does the same
Push notifications can be turned off in your phone's settings at any time. Email hello@thebgl.com.au for any of the above. If you are not happy with our response you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
8. Cookies and measurement
Our website uses essential cookies for things like the store cart and checkout. We use advertising measurement from Meta (the Meta Pixel and Conversions API) to see which of our ads bring people to BGL, and Google Analytics to understand how the website is used, like which pages get read and which buttons get pressed. You can control cookies through your browser settings.
9. Security
We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal information from unauthorised access, change, disclosure or loss. No method of transmission over the internet is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Links to other sites
Our website and app link to other sites, including our partners, our payment providers and social media. We are not responsible for their privacy practices.
11. Under 18s
BGL is for players aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version on this page and update the date at the top. If a change matters to you, we will email you.
