RULES & FAQS
Everything you need to know about how BGL works, from match format and handicaps to registration and scoring.
Every match is a 2v2 Scramble (Ambrose) played as Match Play on net scores. Both players tee off every hole. Your team picks the best ball, and both play from there. Holes are won, lost, or halved based on net scores after handicap strokes are applied.
All 18 holes are always played in full. Unlike traditional match play, your hole differential (holes won minus holes lost) matters for league standings, so every hole counts even if the match result is decided early. Teams can concede individual holes (pick up) since it's match play, but the 18-hole format means there's always something to play for.
Both players must hold a Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. Below 10? Too good for us. Above 36? You're capped at 36. Handicaps are self-reported each match from the Golf Australia app.
Your team handicap is calculated using the formula: (Lower Handicap × 0.35) + (Higher Handicap × 0.15), rounded to the nearest whole number. This means mixed-handicap teams are competitive. A 14 and a 28 won't be miles behind two 18s. Strokes are distributed using a universal stroke index: odd-numbered holes on the front 9, even-numbered holes on the back 9.
Each player's tee shot must be used a minimum of 6 times across the 18 holes. Both players tee off every hole, and the team chooses which ball to play from, but neither player can be ignored off the tee.
The BGL app enforces this with a running tally throughout the round. When the remaining holes equals the remaining required selections for a player, the app will auto-lock to ensure both players hit their minimum. Strategy matters. Choose wisely when to use your big hitter and when to lean on your steady mate.
Each team is allowed one substitute per season (not per match, so use it wisely). Your sub doesn't need to be pre-registered; they can be added on match day through the app.
The substitute must hold a valid Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. Note that the sub won't have app access, so the registered teammate handles all scoring in the app. If you've already used your sub and your teammate can't make another match, you'll need to reschedule or risk a forfeit.
Each season runs for 6 months of regular season (one match per month) plus finals in month 7 for the top 4 teams. Leagues have between 24 and 64 teams, and you're guaranteed 3 home matches and 3 away matches across the season.
Fixtures are generated using postcode proximity matching, so your opponents will be reasonably local. Home team picks the course, and the away team gets to play somewhere new. New leagues start every quarter (April, July, etc.), so if you miss one, there's always a fresh season around the corner.
The points system is simple: Win = 3 points, Draw = 1 point, Loss = 0 points. Your league table position is determined by total points accumulated across the 6 regular-season rounds.
If teams are tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in order: Hole differential (total holes won minus holes lost across the season) → Head-to-head record → Strength of schedule. This is why every hole matters, even if you've already won the match, keep competing for hole differential.
The top 4 teams at the end of the regular season qualify for finals in month 7. Semi-finals are played as 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd, with the higher-seeded team earning home advantage (they pick the course).
Winners progress to the Grand Final. If a finals match is tied after 18 holes, it's decided by sudden-death playoff holes. If the course can't accommodate extra holes, a back-nine countback is used instead.
A forfeit results in a 9-hole win awarded to the opponent (or the actual lead if greater). Both teams are responsible for scheduling each match within the month. The app sends a 7-day reminder if no date is set, and the team blocking the process forfeits.
If an emergency arises mid-round (weather, injury), there are two options: the score stands as-is, or both teams agree to reschedule the full 18 holes. Both teams must agree on the approach. If the app fails during a round, both teams can submit scores manually for admin verification.
After every match, both teams are required to vote for an MVP and a Biggest Battler on the opposing team. This isn't optional. It's part of what makes BGL more than just golf. You're recognising the bloke on the other team who played a blinder, or the one who kept grinding despite shanking it into the trees.
MVP and Biggest Battler leaderboards are tracked across the full season, with awards given at the end. Teams can also upload an optional match selfie and highlight text after each round. These are kept private to BGL and may be used for social content at admin discretion.
GOT QUESTIONS?
Any golfer with a Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. You register as a 2-person team with your mate. Both players need to fall within the handicap range. Below 10? Too good for us. Above 36? Capped at 36. This is a league built for everyday golfers, not touring pros.
$157 per person ($314 per team). That covers your full season entry, BGL merch pack (tees, ball marker, stubby holder), app access, and eligibility for all prizes. Green fees at each course are your own. See all prizes.
We're launching inaugural leagues across Australian states: Melbourne (VIC), Sydney (NSW), Brisbane (QLD), and Gold Coast (QLD). Each league is capped at 64 teams. More regions are coming soon. Register your interest and we'll let you know when your area opens up.
Fixtures are generated using postcode proximity so you'll be matched against teams in your area. You get three home matches and three away matches across the season. Home team picks the course, so away travel is usually pretty reasonable.
Yes, as long as both players have handicaps between 10 and 36. The team handicap formula accounts for the difference: (Lower Handicap × 0.35) + (Higher Handicap × 0.15). Two 10-handicappers will face a tougher time against higher-handicap teams who receive more strokes. The system keeps it fair.
There's no age limit. If you hold an official Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36, you're in. Whether you're 18 or 80, the league is open to you.
Absolutely. BGL is open to everyone — men, women, and mixed teams are all welcome. The only requirement is a valid Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. The handicap system keeps every match fair regardless of who's playing.
We take this seriously. Every player's name and handicap is cross-referenced against their GolfLink number before the season starts. Handicaps are also verified prior to each match, and we encourage you to ask your opponents to show their official GA handicap on the day. So there are layers of checks: our pre-season validation, pre-match verification, and on-the-day accountability.
On top of that, Golf Australia's own handicapping system has built-in measures that limit a player's ability to sandbag aggressively. The integrity of the league is of the utmost importance to us, and we'll continue to build tighter systems as we go to make sure the competition stays fair for everyone.
Every match is 2v2 Ambrose (Scramble) played as Match Play. Both players tee off every hole, your team picks the best ball, and both play from there. Holes are won, lost, or halved based on net scores after handicap strokes. Full 18 holes are always played because hole differential matters for league standings.
Both players need a Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36, self-reported per match. The app calculates your team handicap using: (Lower Hcp × 0.35) + (Higher Hcp × 0.15), rounded to the nearest whole number. Strokes are distributed using a universal stroke index: odds on the front 9, evens on the back 9.
Home team chooses the track. Away team gets to play somewhere new. You'll have three home matches and three away across the season. Everyone pays their own green fees, but away teams could score members rates from their opponents.
Both teams agree on the tee box before the round. We recommend the tees that best suit the group. The goal is fair competition, not ego. If you can't agree, default to the middle tees.
Yes. Green fees, carts, and any food or drinks during the round are your own expense. Your BGL entry fee covers the league, app access, merch pack, and prize pool contribution, not course fees.
Each team gets one substitute per season (not per match). Your sub doesn't need to be pre-registered. They can be added on match day. They must have a valid Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. The registered teammate handles scoring in the app. Use it wisely.
Both teams sign off on scores after each match in the app. If there's a disagreement, BGL admin reviews the evidence and makes a final ruling. The app tracks everything hole-by-hole so there's always a clear record. Teams that block scheduling or refuse to cooperate risk forfeiting.
The grand prize interstate golf trip will be announced in the coming days. Stay tuned. See all prizes.
Plenty of prizes throughout the season: golf gear and apparel, partner discounts, random prize draws, MVP awards, Biggest Battler awards, highlight prizes, and clean sheet awards. You don't need to win the whole thing to walk away with something. See all prizes.
Six months of regular season (one match per month), plus finals in month 7 for the top 4 teams. New leagues start every quarter (April, July, etc.) so there's always a fresh season around the corner. Miss this one? Re-enter with your mate next quarter.
