Everything You Need to Know
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Battler Golf League?
BGL is a 6-month, 2-person Ambrose (Scramble) match play league for everyday amateur golfers. You enter as a team of two, play one match per month against a different opponent, and compete for prizes throughout the season. The top 4 teams play semi-finals and finals in month 7.
How much does it cost?
$157 per person ($314 per team). This covers your full 6-month season entry, app access for both players, a BGL stubby holder, and eligibility for all prizes. Green fees at each course are paid separately by each player.
What handicap do I need?
Both players need a Golf Australia (GA) handicap between 10 and 36. Below 10 is too good for this league, and above 36 is capped at 36. You'll need to confirm your handicap via the Golf Australia app before each match.
What format is each match?
2v2 Scramble (Ambrose), scored as match play. Both players tee off every hole, your team picks the best ball, and both play from there. Net scores determine who wins each hole. Full 18 holes are always played because hole differential matters for league standings.
Where do we play?
Home team picks the course for each match. You'll have 3 home and 3 away matches across the season. Play your local track and discover new courses along the way.
Who pays for green fees?
Each player pays their own green fees at the course. Your BGL entry covers the season, app, merch, and prizes. Green fees are not included. Away teams may be able to score member rates from the home team.
What if I can't make a month?
You have the full month to schedule each match with your opponents via the app. If something comes up, you can use your one substitute for the season or request a reschedule (both teams must agree). If a team doesn't respond to scheduling within the window, they forfeit that round.
Can I use a substitute?
Each team gets one substitute per season (not per match). Your sub doesn't need to be pre-registered and is added on match day. They just need a valid GA handicap between 10 and 36. The registered teammate handles scoring in the app.
When does the Melbourne season start?
The Melbourne league kicks off in April 2026. Once you register, you'll receive your fixture before the first round. More leagues across Australia are launching throughout the year.
Is there an age limit?
No age limit. If you hold a valid Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36, you're eligible. Whether you're 18 or 80, the league is open to you.
Is BGL open to all genders?
Absolutely. BGL is open to everyone. Men, women, and mixed teams are all welcome. The only requirement is a valid Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. The handicap system keeps every match fair.
What prizes can I win?
The grand prize is a luxury interstate golf trip for the winning team (flights, accommodation, green fees, food and drinks). Throughout the season there are also gear prizes, random draws, MVP awards, Biggest Battler awards, highlight prizes, and clean sheet awards.
Do I need to download an app?
Yes. The BGL App is the league. It handles your fixtures, live scoring, league tables, team messaging, scheduling, and more. You'll receive access after registering. The app launches with the season in April 2026.
How do I register?
One person registers the team (the captain). Confirm that both players have a GA handicap between 10 and 36, pay the $314 team entry, and you're in. You'll add your teammate and pick a team name in the app after you sign in.
What about sandbagging and cheating?
We take this seriously. Every player's name and handicap is cross-referenced against their GolfLink number, and handicaps are verified prior to each match. We encourage you to ask your opponents to show their official GA handicap on the day. Golf Australia's handicapping system also has built-in measures that limit aggressive sandbagging. League integrity is our top priority, and we'll continue building tighter systems to keep it fair.
League Rules
Match Format
All matches are 2v2 Scramble (Ambrose), scored as match play. Both players tee off every hole. The team selects the best ball and both players play their next shot from that position. Net scores (after handicap strokes) determine the winner of each hole. All 18 holes are played in full, as hole differential affects league standings.
Handicap System
Both players must hold a Golf Australia handicap between 10 and 36. Handicaps are self-reported from the Golf Australia app before each match. Team handicap is calculated as: (Lower Handicap x 0.35) + (Higher Handicap x 0.15), rounded to the nearest whole number. Strokes are allocated using a universal stroke index.
Tee Shot Rule
Each player must have their tee shot used a minimum of 6 times across the 18 holes. Both players tee off every hole and the team chooses which ball to play from. The app tracks tee shot selections and will auto-lock when the remaining holes equal the remaining required selections for a player.
Scheduling & Forfeits
Teams have the full calendar month to schedule and complete each match. Scheduling is managed via the app. A 7-day reminder is sent if no date has been set. If the blocking team fails to respond, they forfeit the round. A forfeit results in a 9-hole win (or actual lead if greater) awarded to the opponent.
Substitutes
Each team is allowed one substitute per season (not per match). The sub does not need to be pre-registered and is added on match day. Subs must hold a valid GA handicap between 10 and 36. The registered teammate handles scoring in the app.
Scoring & Verification
Scoring is handled live in the BGL App. One player from each team enters scores hole-by-hole. Handicap strokes are automatically calculated. At the end of the round, both teams must verify and sign off on the result. If the app is unavailable, manual score reporting is accepted and verified by an admin.
Points & Standings
Win = 3 points. Draw = 1 point. Loss = 0 points. Tiebreakers are resolved in order: total points, hole differential, head-to-head result, then strength of schedule. League tables are updated live in the app after each match is verified.
Finals & Tiebreakers
The top 4 teams after 6 rounds qualify for finals. Semi-finals (1st vs 4th, 2nd vs 3rd) and the final are played in month 7. The higher seed gets home course advantage. If tied after 18 holes, sudden death playoff holes are played. If the course doesn't permit extra holes, a back nine countback determines the winner.
Built by Battlers, for Battlers
We're two golf-obsessed mates from South Australia who play off ~20. We love the game, we love competing, and we wanted something more than a Saturday morning comp.
So we built it. The Battler Golf League is the league we wished existed.
